Claire>Anyone

Where: The beach
When: Afternoon
Characters: Claire & anyone who would like to respond.

The day was hot and Claire was tired. She'd been going on very little sleep since Aaron's arrival and her frustration and fatigue were growing. She leaned over to change him pulling back the hair that fell into her face and tucking it behind her ears. He'd been fussy most of the morning and afternoon. When she finished, she picked him up, softly humming hoping it would soothe him. After several minutes he still cried and Claire looked around in desperation. She needed some help.

Charlie walked out of the jungle. Shoving his hands in his pockets he whistled as he walked in the direction of the camp fire. When he got closer he heard Aaron was crying and being the overprotective guy he was nowadays Charlie immediately ran towards the sound to check up on Claire and her son. Seeing how tired Claire looked, Charlie held out his arms to take Aaron from her, saying "I'll take care of him, you get some rest".
Claire stared at him for a moment. Though she was mentally and physically tired, she still had a hard time not keeping a watchful eye over Aaron every minute. But when Charlie smiled at her as he held his arms out to take Aaron she carefully handed him over. "He's been fussy all day. I just changed him so he should be okay for a while. I just want to rest an hour or two. Don't let me sleep any longer. He'll need feeding and changing again." She kissed Aaron gently on the forehead. "Thanks Charlie," she said as she stretched out on the makeshift bed. "Only an hour or two, okay." Claire closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
Charlie saw Claire staring at him. Seeing the doubt that lay in her eyes he gave her a reassuring smile. He could take care of Aaron for a little while, she didn't have anything to worry about.

Finally she passed Aaron over to him and Charlie held the little baby close to him, while listening to Claire's instructions. When she was done he said "Sure, I can do that". Claire kissed Aaron and thanked Charlie, making him smile again. He watched how she laid herself down and he already made his way out when she said again, only about two hours. "Two hours, got it", he repeated her as he her eyes closing and he walked away.

Charlie walked over the beach, rocking Aaron in his arms, as he was still softly crying. Like that he walked for over an hour until he realized it really didn't work. Singing a rock song he just made into a lullaby, Charlie went out to look for anyone who could help him. Remembering very well what a great help Sawyer was before whether the guy had helped willingly or not.
Shannon passed by Charlie and Claire on her way to the beach, and half-smiled at the baby. An extremely uncommon gesture, especially for her. She sat down in the sand and leaned back on her hands, staring out at the water thoughtfully.

Minutes later, Charlie startled her by popping out seemingly nowhere, with the crying baby in his arms. Shannon mumbled to herself, "Get the kid to shut up, please and thank you."
Charlie got tired of helplessly walking around with Aaron in his arms. He knew Claire desreved her sleep and he didn't want to bother her. Suddenly he remembered Shannon smiling at the baby minutes before and thought that she might wanted to help him out. After all she was a woman, and in Charlie's tired mind he made the conncetion that all women were born with the ability to get a baby quiet.

Walking back to Shannon he heard her mumbling something in his direction but he couldn't quite hear what she was saying. "Hey there", he said with a grin on his face from ear to ear, thinking he had found his salvation. Plumping down next to Shannon, making sure not to move the baby too much in his arms, he forced Aaron into hers. "Can you help me to make him stop crying?"
Shannon rolled her eyes. Great, the washed up rock star, she thought to herself. She laughed in mockery at his vain attempts to hush the child.

When he sat down next to her she backed away slightly. "Can you help me to make him stop crying?" Right. Like she knew anything about babies. She wrinkled her nose in disgust as the baby was shoved into her arms. "What am I supposed to do?!" she exclamed helplessly.
"Well you're a woman", Charlie replied naive, not noticing that Shannon was just as helpless on this point as he was. "Do... Do... some women stuff", he added.
"Right. Woman stuff." Shannon stood up hesitantly and tried rocking the baby back in forth in her arms, in an extremely awkward manner. "It's not working!" She wondered what in the world he was thinking when he brough the baby to her. "Where's Candice or Christina or whatever the hell her name is? The mother. It's her baby, why are we taking care of it?"
"Claire", Charlie replied. "It's Claire. And the baby's name is Aaron, he's an he, not an it", he added, raising his voice. Sighing he walked forward to take the baby back from Shannon who was obviously not qualified for the job. He was afraid she'd do something stupid, like dropping Aaron. Tapping with his foot in the sand he held out his arms so Shannon could give him the baby back. "And Claire's sleeping. She hasn't had a decent sleep in days, I just want to help her. Do you know anyone around here wo could know why Aaron doesn't stop crying?"
"Okay, Claire," she responded flippantly. "and Aaron. Ex-cuuuse me." She rocked him gently and his wailing subsided a bit. "Finally." Handing him back to Charlie, she snarkily added, "Next time, make sure you can actually do the job before you volunteer." She crossed her arms and shifted her weight from one foot to the other.
Charlie watched in surprise how Aaron's crying became less, even if it only was a little bit. Just then Shannon quickly handed him the baby back, who immediately started to cry louder again. She snapped at Charlie he shouldn't volunteer for something he couldn't do and he wanted say something back about that to her, but he didn't. Looking back from Aaron in his arms to Shannon who was now looking like an angry teenager with her crossed arms, he decided he had to stick around her some longer. "Did you notice that?", he asked.
Shannon smiled triumphantly when he didn't respond to her snappy comment. One thing she was really good at was getting under people's skin. In response to his question, she raised her eyebrow and stared at him as though he was a crazy person. "Notice what?"
"Don't tell me you didn't notice", Charlie said enthusiastic, practically jumping up and down in the sand. "When you hold Aaron, or maybe you talked and he heard something erm female in your voice, I don't know, anyway when you hold him he calmed down a bit. The crying became less." Looking hopefully in the direction of Shannon he continued: "You gotta help me, Aaron likes you".
"I'm not holding that...thing, again. No way." She backed away reluctantly. "I'm not a baby person." She sighed and tucked a strand of hair away, watching him cry. Charlie's eyes pleaded with her, and she mumbled under her breath. "Fine, just for a minute." Her arms shot out reluctantly to grab him.
Charlie held his mouth stiff when Shannon called Aaron a 'thing'. He didn't want to argue with the chance to loose his only chance on silence. He didn't move, but kept standing in front of her, hoping she would give in. And she did. When Shannon held out her arms Charlie gently placed in Aaron in it, making sure she would hold him the right way. She might be his only chance on peace at the moment, she didn't know what exactly she was doing. When he thought she held Aaron in the right position Charlie waited for her to do a little magic. "Common talk to him, or sing a lullaby", he pushed Shannon.
Shannon grasped him awkwardly and swayed back and forth. Her eyes widened when he asked her to sing, but she agreed. "Quelque part au delà de la mer..."
"Why are you singing French?", Charlie thought out loud. It made him think of Danielle and he didn't want to be reminded of that woman. Only the thought of her made him go sick. Shaking his head to get rid of the memories he looked at Shannon and Aaron. Funny how the one person on the island that found herself the least qualified for the job, actually seemed the one to be the most capable of doing it now. Aaron's crying became less and less until he finally stopped.
Shannon looked up, thankful for the break from singing. "I uh, I spent a year in Paris. A long time ago." She looked back down at the baby, falling asleep in her arms. His tiny hand curled around her slender finger and she smiled faintly. The wind blew threw the trees, and he shivered lightly in her arms.
"Really?", Charlie said in a whispering voice to not wake Aaron. "That's awesome. I have been in Paris, and other European cities like Rotterdam and Berlin. We had an European tour. Because, I am in a band you know. Driveshaft."
"mmhm," she mumbled, only half listening. They'd been here a month, and people still didn't realize that she frankly had no interest in most of what they had to say. It was useless to talk about life before...no one was coming. They were dead to the world, everything is just a distant memory now. Some of which she didn't have any desire to relive.
Charlie was disappointed Shannon didn't respond enthusiastic to him when he told her about Driveshaft. They did were very famous, until Liam... Sighing he looked back at Shannon and saw her eyes had wandered off. "Hey are you listening?", he said waving his hand in front of her face.
She blinked when he waved his hand in her face. "Listening to what?" she asked, absent mindedly. Shaking her head, she grumbled loudly. "What am I supposed to do, stand here forever while the creature sleeps?" She laughed loudly at her own joke.
"Ssshhh", Charlie said paranoid when he heard Shannon's laughter getting louder and louder. "Don't wake him up again, please. And it's Aaron I told you, not 'it', not 'thing' and not 'creature'. Do you have any idea how childish you sound?"
Shannon glared at him coldly. "I don't care what you think of me." She sat down in the sand gently, placing the baby in her lap. A breeze blew her hair back over her shoulders.
Charlie closed his eyes and let Shannon's snappy voice past him. Usually he'd respond back in exactly the same way, but not here, not now, he needed Shannon and unfortunately for Charlie she knew it all too well.
